Sex Steroid and Thyroid Hormone Receptor Expressions in the Thyroid of the American Alligator (<i>ALLIGATOR MISSISSIPPIENSIS</i>) During Different Life Stages

چکیده
The expression of estrogen receptors, ESR1 (ERa) and ESR2 (ERb), and androgen receptors (AR) in the thyroid gland has been reported in few vertebrate species other than a few mammals. This study reports the presence of sex steroid hormone receptors and thyroid receptors (ERa, ERb, AR, TRa, and TRb) in the thyroid gland of the American alligator at several life stages. It provides a semiquantification and distribution of ERa in the thyroid follicle cells using an immunohistochemical approach as well as reports quantitative differences in mRNA expression of ERa, ERb, TRa, TRb, and AR in the same tissue using quantitative real time-PCR (Q-PCR) with primers designed specifically for alligators. The thyroid tissue of the American alligator expresses ERa, ERb, and AR at all of the life stages examined here although no statistically significant differences were observed between male and female in thyroid mRNA expression for any of the genes analyzed. No sexual dimorphism was observed in ERa immunostaining. No statistical analysis across life stages were performed due to confounding factor of season. J. متن کاملDevelopmental effects of embryonic exposure to toxaphene in the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis).
A variety of organochlorine pesticides have been shown to adversely affect embryonic development. A number of abnormalities have been documented in alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) from highly-contaminated Lake Apopka, FL, USA that are similar to the results of experimental studies exposing embryos to pesticides. In the current study, we exposed developing alligator embryos to varying co...

Steroid hormones are essential for health in vertebrates. Corticosteroids, for example, have a regulatory role in many physiological functions, such as osmoregulation, respiration, immune responses, stress responses, reproduction, growth, and metabolism. Although extensively studied in mammals and some non-mammalian species, the molecular mechanisms of corticosteroid hormone (glucocorticoids an...

We report a host gender bias in haemogregarine infection characteristics in the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) at the Savannah River Site, South Carolina, USA. Prevalence and severity in female alligators was higher than it was in males. The reason for this pattern is not clear.
متن کاملA new species of leech of the genus Placobdella (Hirudinida, Glossiphoniidae) from the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) in Mississippi, USA
To date, the only species of leech reported from the American Alligator, Alligator mississippiensis is Placobdella multilineata. Seven specimens of a previously undescribed species of Placobdella were collected from the feet and lower jaw of a single female alligator from the Pascagoula River Wildlife Management Area, George County, Mississippi. The new species was named Placobdella siddalli Ri...
